School Safety

We encourage families to walk or bike to school. Where this is not possible, families must be aware and sensitive to school and neighborhood parking regulations. As well our parking lot can be extremely busy.

Please be respectful and do not park in the staff parking lot or in the designated handicap parking spots (without the appropriate legal and medical documentation).

Parking Lot Guidelines

It is important that we keep the fire lane free of parked cars at all times.  You may use the center lane to drop off your children but under no circumstances should your vehicle be left unattended or stopped for any length of time.  No parking permitted along the fence at any time.  The fire department has advised us that they will be enforcing this no parking regulation.  Not only does this back up traffic onto Old Clayburn Road, but it makes it very difficult to see the children walking between the cars as they move from your vehicle to the sidewalk.

Please keep in mind that the entrance is quite narrow.  If you park too close to the entrance, it will block traffic onto Old Clayburn Road.  For parents who walk their children to school, please do not go through the front parking lot at any time.  We ask that you walk around the school on the sidewalk to get to the entrance door.  (Either behind the school or use the sidewalk by the road at the front of the school.) Please show your children the proper way around to the back of the school and teach them to stay out of the parking lot area.  If you have older children who walk to school by themselves, please ensure that they are using the crosswalk.

Keep in mind that if you park between the crossing guard and the school parking lot exit it makes it extremely difficult to see the children crossing the road.  For the safety of our children, please adhere to the above procedures.  Thank you.

Margaret Stenersen Elementary is a closed campus. The purpose of this policy is to regulate access by any person or organization to students in District No. 34 (Abbotsford), and to avoid interruptions of school programs. All visitors including parents/guardians/caregivers must:

  • Report to the office.
  • Obtain and wear a visitor badge/pass while at the School.

Closure of Schools for Extreme Weather

On occasion, it is necessary to temporarily close a school when weather conditions might endanger the health and safety of students only. The Superintendent of Schools has authority on behalf of the Board, to temporarily close a school.

If parents believe the local conditions are unsafe, they should keep their child at home or arrange his/her early dismissal.

The SBO has an automated phone service that calls everyone's house in the event of urgent information and emergency news that needs to get to parents. You will recieve an automated phone call if school is cancelled.   Families can also check for updates on the Godson and  School District websites.  Announcements will be made on our local radio station, STAR FM 98.3, Country 107.1 FM, Punjabi Radio 1550 AM or most local news TV stations.
